Arizona History Timeline

The study of history gives students a useful frame of reference for understanding past events and how they shaped the present. Arizona’s history is the classic Old West tale of cowboys and Indians, offering insight into the clash of cultures between a young nation in pursuit of manifest destiny and a hunter/gatherer society fighting to preserve its existence. Early settlers faced many obstacles, including the war parties of great American Indian chiefs Geronimo and Cochise. Their eventual conquest by the U.S. Cavalry along with the development of wagon roads and railroads paved the way for the settlement and taming of the wild western frontier. This chronological timeline of important dates, events, and milestones in Southwestern history shows the actual sequence of events as they happened, while providing a comprehensive overview of the whole picture.
